Jobhunting Rant

What really bugs me about jobhunting is the amount of posts that say they need a graduate.

Now, I didn't get the chance to go to university - having lived on my own since I was 16. But I know that a lot of these jobs - I could do!

Yeah, I don't have the peice of paper that says I spent three/four years studying, but I have double that in work and real life experience, yet I don't think that gets counted a lot of the time.
What confuses me is when the job is really low paid (as in, you wouldn't even start to pay your student loan back low) and something easily learnt.

In some cases I don't think it's the degree they're asking for, but someone of graduate calibre - which I am, overall. I learn constantly, I teach myself things that I need/want to know, but that self-directed learning doesn't seem to count unless you have a scraggy peice of paper to prove it!
I've applied for something that I have the experience and passion for, but I don't think I'll get because I don't have a degree, and that annoys me!

I completely understand that some roles you need a degree for - scientist, teacher of most subjects etcetc, but what about the people who want these interesting, challenging, rewarding roles that didn't get the chance to go to uni? or even do ALevels? It doesn't mean they're not intelligent enough!

Despite what I think a lot of the time, I am intelligent, I know a heck of a lot of things, I am clever and capable, and frankly, in a lot of things, I am of a graduate calibre, if not more. I just don't understand why people don't realise that you can be those things without a degree.

You have my sympathies, I am in exactly the same position, people are obsessed with meaningless bits of paper these days.
Can you make money out of knitting? If I had the money I'd commission you to knit me a lovely jumper made of mohair!
Good luck with the jobhunting.
